I’m writing this guide because I bought a Dell Inspiron 1525 and was disappointed to find how difficult it was to remove Windows Vista and replace it with Windows XP.
For this guide I assume you have a working Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop with the pre-installed copy of Windows Vista.
This guide should enable you to remove Windows Vista and replace it with Windows XP
The first hurdle when installing XP is that of drivers: the 1525 supports a new bit of Intel tech called AHCI, this allows for some performance advantages over standard ATA, however the AHCI drivers are not available in the standard Windows XP setup; this will prevent Windows Setup from detecting your hard disk drive.
To get around this problem there are two solutions:
1. Using the bios, switch from AHCI to ATA
2. Create a custom Windows XP Install disc
Whilst the first option is clearly the easiest it does not allow us to take advantage of the 1525’s full capabilities, for this reason, we will create a custom XP install disc
To create a custom install disc you will need to download a copy of nLite. You can download a copy of nLite here
After downloading and installing nLite you will also need to get the AHCI drivers to use in the custom install disc. You can download the drivers here. After downloading the drivers you will also need to extract them into a folder for later use.
To create our custom install disc you first need to create a folder on your computer and copy the contents of your XP install disc into that folder
When you start nLite it will ask you to locate your windows installation files, after this nLite will also ask you to select tasks, for this, the only one you need to select is “Drivers”. Next nLite will ask what drivers you would like to integrate, for this, select the folder you previously extracted the drivers into and then click next, nLite will now begin the process of creating a custom install image.
You should now be able to use this image to install XP.
The rest of the job is simply downloading and installing drivers for various hardware; some links that I found useful are listed below:
Broadcom Wireless Card Driver
Marvell Yukon Wired Card Driver
Intel GM965 Video Card Driver
Ricoh R5C833 Flash Drive controller Driver
Sigmatel Audio STAC 92XX C-Major HD Driver
